“Using Participatory Media and Public Voice to Encourage Civic Engagement”

I found a video on youtube on which a group of young men did about “Bullying at School“. The video is about a couple of cool guys and a young man whom one the guys considers to be a nerd. The group of guys are using this video to pass on the message about a victim fighting back against the bully. The victim tried to befriend the bully at first but he ends up running away from them cause the bully is making fun of him infront of the other people around them. The victim runs into the washroom and locks the door and the bully is smacking on the door. The other guy is telling his friend the bully to leave the guy alone and asks him why he is bothering him in the first place, the bully says it’s because he is a nerd. A bully often targets a victim which he/she sees as a weak person, and this what is the video is about. Frederrik is the victims name, Petter is the bully and Johan is the guy who tells Frederrik to ignore Petter cause he thinks he’s cool. At lunchtime Frederik walks up to the boys at their table and Petter calls him a nerd again to Johan. He makes fun of Frederik and tells him to leave. Still makes fun of him and Frederik yells out making fun of him and Petter runs off. the reason why i chose this video is that “BULLYING”  has to be or at least tried to be stopped. I chose it because it has a part where the victim fights back and stops the bully from hurting his feelings anymore. A lot of us were at one point have been a victim from bullying. This video was made by the three guys in the video who play as themselves. The video helps a victim of bullying think about standing up for themselves.

‘Why Youth Social Network Sites: The Role of Networked Publics in Teenage Social Life’

If i were teaching high school students, I would definately use WordPress.com. I might use Facebook cause i feel it has more of an awareness of maturity with it. I am not to sure about Bebo cause of the layout. I mean some of the things that are on Bebo is a bit too much from my point of view, such as adding the stickerz that people are sending each other on bebo, the vocubulary is often a bit too much. You see photos of people that are having a party at a home when there are children there. Those kinds of photos bother me cause the message that is being set there is disturbing for me, i mean what kind of message are the youth getting from that?. It also makes me wonder when a person that you know is working for youth in your community and they have photos of themselves partying, getting high, what are the youth learning from that?. So therefore i am not to keen on using bebo as an education tool for the youth in our community unless you can control the usage of it. WordPress would be a great way of having them explore with what we have been leaning about using video as to teaching. It would be a great if we had the right kind of equipment to use in the classroom, well atleast for the highschool students.

” Video game Invasion:The History of a Global Obsession”

What is my reaction to the video we watched, i don’t really know what to say. It was a bit long for me to really understand the whole video. What i could get out of it was that they really had big ideas which some worked and some didn’t and the company’s lost alot of money and some even went into bankruptcy. They were concentrating on beating the other companies and meeting the deadlines on when to put the new ideas in the stores to see how they would sell. I hear some people saying that video games are not good for children cause if they spent too much time on them they lose interest in other educational activities such as losing interest in going to school. Losing lack of sleep, their minds are something to really worry about. Then there are those parents that say that they help children with learning how to read , write and even speak in english. I think that it was ok if you limited the use of the video games to your children until they became violent. It may also be good for them to learn about the technology as it changes. My kids have X-Box, Gamecube, Wii and X-Box360.  Today children are so into Guitar Hero, Rock band,, I often see children and teenagers walking by pretending to play the guitar. I know that here it is a big thing cause families are starting to have musical instruments in their homes. I think that the video game has a big part in to do with that.I still like playing the classic video games such as pacman, tetris, and other arcade games when i get the chance to play them. To me I feel that’s it’s ok to have your child to play with the video games as long as you can control how much and what kinds of video games they are playing that is acording to your beliefs.

No Address Analysis done by:Evelyn Dick and Deborah Masty

We Chose the film No Address cause some of the people interviewed in this film are from our hometown known as Kuujjuarapik in innuktitut. It is a film about Aboriginal people who are homeless in Montreal. The film was directed by Alanis Obomsawin in 1988. We got the video from Aboriginal Perspective films. We also chose this film because we are starting to see it in our own community as there is a couple living in a tent not too far from the town due to not having a place to stay in since their house was on fire and lives were lost from that incident.  The film reflects on the following

  • Almost everyone of the people moved to Montreal with high hopes of finding a job and having a good life in the city.
  • They end up going on welfare but the amount they get is nowhere enough to have a good life with.
  • Low income means not being able to find low cost housing.
  • The men end up humiliating themselves by asking for spare change on the streets until they get chased away by the police.
  • Women sell their bodies to get what they want.
  • Living in condemned buildings, where they get chased away from there as well due to the fear of not being able to get the people out in time if a fire starts.
  • Drinking and drugs.
  • A mystery bus goes around at 12 a.m to find any people who are homeless and roaming the streets their  mission is to feed them.
  • Friendship Centers are a big help but they can’t provide shelters.
  • They get depressed.
  • They are runaways and are determined not to go back home cause of the abuse.
  • Some miss home and wish they could go back but can’t.
  • They sometimes get to a point where they wish they could get arrested so they can have a place to stay and have three meals a day.

The video we chose that we feel reflects to the film is called Homelessness in Canada video.google.com .It is a video that really encourages people to TAKE ACTION in helping the homeless people. The video has a brief description of what it’s like being homeless and has little texts that pop up in the video and help make you think about  HOW to do your part in TAKING ATION to help the homeless people. The songs asks questions about topic of being homeless. This is an awareness video that is made to inspire us to motivate ourselves to take action in helping the homeless people. This video is 4mins long and was made in April 7 of 2008.

How my son Learned to Read and Write from the media.

The media is powerful from my point of view as i have seen a tremendous improvement in my sons reading and writing skills. At one of the visits i had with his teacher is when i found out that he was struggling with his reading and writing skills. From there i tried everything to try and help him improve on his reading skills first before i started on his writing skills. I bought books for him i thought he would be interested in, such as books on sports. I even made time to read with him but he just wasn’t into it at all. I went on the website on Sylvan Learning to see if there was something there that could help me find a way to get started when i thought i wasn’t getting anywhere with him. Then we had an Archie Comic book lying around, i saw him reading it, i didn’t do anything to approach him about it, because i was afraid he might stop reading it if i said something. We had bought a computer a few months before i knew that he had this problem, when i look back on it now i see that he was reluctant to try and use the computer for any reason except for playing music. So i had my sister create emails for me and my two  older sons. At first he was kind of hesitant to chat with anybody, but when he saw that his friends wanted to chat with him he became more determined to be able to read and write. In the beggining he was always asking me what a word said, or asked me to spell out a word for him. Once he built up his confidence  to read and write, I noticed that he asked for my help less and less when he was chatting with his friends. I was so proud of him when his teacher told me just how impressed she was with his writing skills. She said that he was able to write heart warming stories that really touched her. From his writing she was able to tell just how much he loved to be out on the land with his grandfather and his family. Today he enjoys bebo surfing, going on YouTube, chatting and typing on word perfect. I am so proud of him when i see him writing in his little book that he is always writing in. He writes short poems and songs he likes in that book.
